This gives a yellowish hue to the clothes. Textile manufacturers use optical brightening agents to get rid of this yellow hue by effectively utilizing the reflection caused by blue light rays. The OBAs convert the ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun into a visible blue light that makes the fabric whiter. OBAs are very commonly added to commercial fabric detergents to enhance the brightness of clothes. Several factors influence the brightness imparted by OBA.

Factors influencing the Optical Brightener’s performance

1. Substrate: The material of the fabric also affects the output of the OBAs. A white cotton fabric will give a more substantial reflectance than a weaker fabric like wool.

2. Method of application: There are different OBA application methods that offer different whitening effects. For instance, the exhaust process of application is known to provide better brightness than the padding method of application.

3. pH: The pH value of the solution dramatically impacts the solubility and affinity of the OBA with the fabric.

4. Time: Different factors, such as migration time and exhaustion rate, influence the OBA application.

Problems Caused By OBAs In Textile Printers

Every manufacturer’s widespread use of OBAs across the textile industry has raised issues with textile printers. Different companies sell OBAs, and other brands of OBAs correspond to different whiteness levels. This creates a problem for digital textile printers. The digital printers will not be able to impart the required color to the fabric as the OBAs will interfere with the brightness. This results in a mismatch between the processed colors and the final product’s color.

Moreover, the brightness of the color of the final product may vary with the light. The need of the hour is to develop standards for manufacturing Optical Brightening Agents (OBA) to get consistent performance. The textile industry is dealing with the lack of a regulatory process for the manufacturing of optical brightening agents. The use of digital printers is increasing, and solving this issue can help digital printing in the textile industry in multiple ways.
