Everything You Need to Know about Optical Brightening Agents
What is OBA?
Optical brightening agents(OBA) are used to enhance the appearance of fabric and consumer apparel.
On exposure to the UV rays, they absorb the colors in the spectrum to reemit in the blue range. They are generally used along with other colorants to get the desired shades.
They are widely used with plastics to suppress their inherent yellow color and emit brightness. OBAs have a high melting point allowing them to mix with the molten plastic and give any shade easily.
The whitening effect exhibited by the OBAs is the reason behind its wide use across different industries and materials.

Uses of Optical Brightening Agents:
Optical Brightener in Textile Industries:
Optical brighteners are very commonly used in the textile industry to enhance the brightness of the fabric. The bright appearance is of any material is responsible for its commercial value.
This is why we have Optical brighteners for the textile sector, aggressively used in the bleaching or whitening process. It can be said to be used in wet textile processing.
During the procedure, colored impurities are removed using techniques such as oxidation to derive colorless products.
After treatment with the OBA, the fabric appears to be brighter, again subjected to the coloring process.
Optical Brightener in Laundry Detergent:
The Optical Brightening Agents have been used in laundry detergent for decades. Its characteristics make the fabric appear brighter to the naked eye after cleaning with the agent.
It has successfully replaced bluing, which was conventionally used as the laundry agent to give the fabric a blue-colored appearance.
The Optical brightening agents mitigate over rubbing and washing the material for a brighter appearance, damaging its quality.
Optical Brighteners in Paper:
Optical brighteners are used in manufacturing to eliminate the yellowness of the raw materials: bamboo and other things. As a result, the final product, paper, appears to be brighter.
Optical brighteners for the paper industry are also available for printing purposes. It is also used during paper recycling to improve the color of the final product.
The amount of OBA added must be maintained and should not exceed the specified limit.
Optical Brighteners in Plastics:
The plastic industry forms one of the most common applications of OBAs as they easily mix in them.
In addition, the rapidly growing use of plastics across every sector has encouraged the manufacturers to use products such as OBAs that can enhance the look of the plastics and make them commercially profitable products.
